Ruth Borgenicht (USA) - Clay
Lucie Heskett-Brem (Switzerland) - Metal
David Licata (USA) - Glass
Tine De Ruysser (Belgium / UK) - Paper Money
We are a newly formed group of artists, all working in chain mail. We were brought together by Swiss artist Lucie Heskett-Brem, who recognised our common fascination with reinterpreting the traditional approach of this ancient technique. Even though we all use the same technique of linking rings together, each one of us has found a personal, innovative way of transforming it in our chosen medium.
Chain mail is closely related to textile design. It was originally created as flexible weapon-proof clothing that would allow the wearer freedom of movement to fight. This utilitarian material is also very beautiful. All of us have left the traditional function of this material behind, and we are now exploring ways to expand on the aesthetics.
Ruth Borgenicht creates ceramic sculptures and wall hangings. David Licata makes sculptures and jewellery in glass. Both play with the contrast between a structure that is supposed to protect and the fragile material it is made from. Tine De Ruysser constructs chain mail from banknotes, commenting on the perceived value of both precious metals and money. Lucie Heskett-Brem is the only one using the traditional metal. However, she has chosen to create eerily light and increasingly 3D structures, almost like spider silk.
Our proposal is a group-exhibition utilizing chain mail techniques in various forms and materials. The title of our group is 4 in1, which refers, not only to four artists working together, but also to a traditional chain mail technique, linking four links through each separate link. We will also use the wordplay on 4-in-1, which when spoken out loud sounds like ‘foreign one’. This interpretation of our group's name refers to our unorthodox methods and improbable creations, which exist far outside the traditional practices of our chosen media.
